“We Can Not Direct The Wind, But We Can Adjust Our Sails” –
(quote by Thomas Monson)
I returned home from visiting my mom with cancer just in time for more opportunities to “adjust my sails” in life. The inside of our house is in complete disarray from all the boxes that were packed prior to our house sale falling through the week before, and now we are dealing with the outside of the house which is a mess from the wrath of unexpected Hurricane Sally.
I’m not sure if anyone else feels this way, but when things around me are chaotic (whether happening to me personally or just in the world), I feel turmoil inside of me. I’m anxious, on edge, more tired, and more negative. Probably a reason I’ve started limiting the news. I realize these happenings in my life are pretty minor compared to some things others are going through, but I still don’t want them to rob me of peace and joy; therefore, adjustments on my part are necessary.
Here is my top three guide for adjusting your sails when life’s winds force change:
1. Reduce power – Be okay with letting go of control. Take a breathier. Meditate, contemplate, and most importantly pray. Be comfortable with the uncomfortable.
2. Lessen Tension – Find ways to de-stress. Think positive. Remember God never leaves your side.
3. Change Course – Drop expectations and need for it to be “your way”. Be open to new possibilities. Remain hopeful. Remember that God works all things for goof for those who love Him.
Don’t let change take the wind out of your sails; instead make these necessary adjustments that allow you to press forward in life and still find joy in the journey God has set before you (my moms new favorite saying). Doing this will allow you to grow stronger, become more resilient and be more prepared for the next windstorm (or hurricane) that yes – will come your way. Here’s to smooth sailing!
